First Aid

You must have a relevant paediatric First Aid course suitable to the care of babies and children including training in the following areas:

  • dealing with emergencies
  • resuscitation
  • shock, choking and anaphylactic shock.

You must have completed this First Aid certificate within the 3 years prior to the date of application.

  • Ask at your local Citizens Advice Bureau
  • Look on the Internet

The Red Cross website provides a search engine to find paediatric first aid courses (called First Aid for Child Carers) in your local area. This can be found at http://www.redcrossfirstaidtraining.co.uk/ The course is 12 hours delivered over two days. You can also call 0870 1709110 to find out about local courses. Payment has to be made in advance of the course and course prices vary between centres. Concessions are available.

The St John's Ambulance website provides a search engine to find paediatric first aid courses (called Early Years First Aid) in your local area. This can be found at http://www.sja.org.uk/training/ The course is 12 hours delivered over two days. You can also call 020 7258 3456 to find out about local courses. Payment has to be made at the time of booking before the course begins and course prices vary between centres.

Courses run once per month in London, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Hertfordshire. Hours: 9am-4pm (6hr course) Cost varies depending on area and ranges from £45 - £75. (3 year certificates are issued after completion of course).

Applicants who have lived abroad

Any evidence you produce from countries other than Great Britain must also be from a verifiable source and if necessary translated into English by an accredited translation agency, embassy or high commission.

However, due to the time it can take to verify the evidence you may wish to consider attending an acceptable induction and /or first aid course in England.
